Our Review
The 2021 BMW X2 is the ideal option for those who want a vehicle that boasts both style and performance. It's an upgrade from its sibling, the X1, with a more aggressive look and slightly sharper handling. This makes it a great choice for those who want to take their driving experience to the next level. It comes with a standard 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with an optional 302-hp version available. The X2 may not be as spacious as the X1, but it still has enough room to store enough items for a day's worth of shopping. Plus, it comes with a range of high-end amenities and some standard active safety features, making it a great choice for those who want a premium experience without breaking the bank.
What's New
For 2021, BMW is introducing the X2 with only a few tweaks from its predecessor. Most notably, the Edition M Mesh appearance package will now come as standard and features a mesh grille, exclusive wheels, black exterior trim, and M Sport seats. Furthermore, SiriusXM satellite radio has been added to all models while LED fog lamps have unfortunately been removed. The sporty M35i model has also gained an updated mesh grille design while non-M variants can no longer be fitted with the Dynamic Handling package option. Both the 2021 X2 front-drive sDrive28i or all-wheel-drive xDrive28i models are fun to drive and exhibit excellent handling characteristics. However, if you really want to take your driving experience to the next level, we recommend upgrading to the X2 M35i with its powerful 302hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
The 2021 X2 has a powertrain identical to its boxier counterpart, the X1. It features a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine attached to an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive (sDrive28i). For those looking for all-wheel drive capability, they can opt for the xDrive28i which is available at an additional cost of $2000. The engine is a delight to use; it revs eagerly, operates seamlessly, and packs plenty of power. This model clocked an impressive 6.4-second sprint to 60 mph; only 0.1 seconds behind its closest competitors - the BMW X1 xDrive28i and Volvo XC40 T5 models respectively. In our hands, we found that the BMW M35i model, boasting 302 horsepower, could accelerate to 60 mph in an astonishingly short 4.6 seconds. The X2's sport suspension may make for a slightly uncomfortable ride, but it rewards drivers with its impressive agility and predictability on winding roads. Take it for a spin on a few winding roads and you'll understand why many are willing to accept the lack of comfort for improved control.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The X2 may not be the most economical choice in its class, but it still offers exemplary fuel economy. Models with front-wheel drive can achieve up to 32 miles per gallon on the highway, while all-wheel-drive versions reach up to 31 mpg. In actual tests, the X2 performed better than expected, managing 36 mpg over a 200-mile route. The all-wheel-drive X1 and XC40 T5, on the other hand, achieved only 29 mpg.
The X2's interior isn't as flashy as its exterior, but it is still well-crafted and nicely appointed. The driving position is pleasant, and all the necessary controls are easy to reach. Although rear headroom is limited, passengers should generally be comfortable. BMW provides a variety of authentic and faux leather upholstery options. Unfortunately, the X2's sculpted rear lacks the practicality of the X1 allowing less room for hauling luggage.

All BMWs come standard with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is powered by the exceptional iDrive software and is operated using a center console knob. Upgrade to Premium for the head-up display, as well as Apple CarPlay integration. Unfortunately, Android Auto is not supported in the 2021 X2. The seven-speaker audio system will please casual listeners but audiophiles may want to opt for the Harman/Kardon premium sound system if they’re willing to pay extra.

The 2021 X2 hasn't been evaluated by the NHTSA in terms of crash testing, nor did it receive a Top Safety Pick designation from IIHS. Nevertheless, it does come with a basic suite of driver-assistance technologies as standard, with more advanced options available at an additional cost. Still, safety remains central to this model as evidenced by these key features:

Looking at the warranty coverage of the X2, it is average in comparison to other vehicles. However, BMW does offer three full years of complimentary scheduled maintenance—which Mercedes cannot provide its customers with. If you are looking for a vehicle that offers better protection and powertrain assurance then perhaps you should consider investing in the Lexus NX, Lincoln MKC, or Cadillac XT4 as they all extend their warranties by two years more than what is offered by X2.
