Our Review
BMW has long been known for its luxury SUVs, and the 2021 X3 continues the tradition. For 2021, BMW has added several standard (and well-needed) features to the X3 lineup, including both Android Auto smartphone connectivity and SiriusXM satellite radio. The 2021 X3 is offered with a trio of engines - two inline four-cylinder models and an inline-six that produces a whopping 382 hp. The X3's conservative interior design won't wow you, but it's well-built and spacious. The pleasantly trimmed cabin is well-equipped with a host of tech features and high-quality materials making it plenty comfortable, with sufficient space for luggage. With its combination of luxury and performance, the BMW X3 is sure to please even the most discerning buyer.
The 2021 X3 is available in four different models: the sDrive30i, the xDrive30i, the xDrive30e, and the M40i. The entry-level X3 sDrive30i is rear-wheel drive only, while the other three models all feature all-wheel drive. The sDrive30i and xDrive30i are both powered by a 2.0L turbocharged engine that produce 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The M40i runs on a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine that produces a staggering 382 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid xDrive30e combines a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with an electric motor and battery. All four models come standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Despite its small size, the X3 handles well, effortlessly weaving around corners, and providing a satisfying amount of athleticism.
The X3's stylish, yet conservative interior is packed with a plethora standard features. The 10-way power-adjustable front seats are extremely comfortable and the side bolsters can be adjusted to provide extra support. The rear seats are also well crafted with reclining seatbacks and plenty of cushioning. The rest of the cabin is handsomely appointed with high-quality materials and tight panel gaps. The woodgrain trim looks luxurious and the faux-leather dash and door coverings add that extra touch of extravagance. The X3 also has plenty of cargo space behind the second row with room for seven carry-ons. This makes it a great choice for families and long road trips.
Any modern luxury car is expected to come with a fully featured infotainment system, and BMW's iDrive interface does not disappoint. The 10.3-inch infotainment display is crisp and clear, and the in-dash navigation is among the best in the business. Bluetooth phone connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and one USB port are standard, but every other infotainment feature is offered as an optional extra. For those looking to juice two devices at once, a second USB port is optional as is a wireless smartphone charging pad. The only drawback of the iDrive interface is that it can be challenging to use while driving; thankfully, BMW offers an optional head-up display that projects important information onto the windshield. Overall, the iDrive interface is everything a modern luxury car's infotainment system should be.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the 2021 X3 is a five-star safety vehicle, but the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) does not consider it a top safety pick. There is an extensive array of driver-assistance features available, however, BMW offers most basic features as standard. The first optional driver assistance package available is called the Parking Assistance Package ($700), which comprises Active Park Distance Control, Surround View w/3D View, Rear View Camera, and Parking Assistant Plus. Next, the Driving Assistance Professional Package ($1,700), features ACC Stop & Go + Active Driving Assistant (DISC), active cruise control w/stop and go, active lane keeping assistant w/side collision avoidance, traffic jam assistant, evasion aid and front cross-traffic alert. Key standard safety features include:
In this segment, BMW's X3 offers a standard four-year or 50,000-mile warranty, which is fairly typical. A free three-year maintenance plan is nice, but it's offered by the Volvo XC60 and Cadillac XT5 as well.
