Our Review
The 2022 BMW Z4 is a good-looking roadster with a potent turbocharged engine, superb handling, and an upscale cabin comfortable enough to serve as your daily driver. The base Z4 engine is a turbocharged four-cylinder, while the M40i model hosts a twin-turbo inline-six. All Z4s are rear-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic transmission as well-tuned for sporty driving as it is for the highway. Although its handling isn't as impressive as its competitor, the Porsche Boxter, it is still a blast to drive. The 2022 Z4 is only available as a soft-top convertible.

The sDrive30i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. It accelerates from 0-60-mph in 5.1 seconds, according to a test performed by our friends at CarandDriver.com. The M40i model hosts a twin-turbocharged inline-six with 382-hp and 368 pound-feet of torque, knocking its 0-60-mph time down to just 3.8 seconds (that's quicker than the 350-hp Porsche Boxster S). Both engines are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with both Sport and Manual modes. The eight-speed in the 2022 Z4 is one of the best you will find in any sports car, with quick responses, tight shifts, and smooth handling. For the first time, the BMW Z4 will not feature the traditional manual transmission with a clutch pedal. Instead, paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel come standard for use in Manual mode.

The 2022 BMW Z4 has a high-quality interior that is one of the best in its class. The interior features luxe materials, exquisite panel fitment, and incredible control placement. The seats are like sitting on a cloud with good-sized bolsters that keep you held in place for its sporty driving. There is more room inside than you'd think, and it feels thick and insulated with its cloth roofs sealing tightly. The Z4's interior is tranquil when the top is up, with neither wind nor road noise spoiling the experience. With the push of a button, the top folds down in just a few seconds, with a wind blocker coming standard to minimize wind buffeting even at higher speeds. The interior storage is very generous, with multiple storage bins around the cabin, a netted shelf behind the seats, and two giant cupholders up front—the trunk measures in at ten cubic feet, which isn't massive but plenty for two people.

The 2022 BMW Z4 comes standard with a massive 10.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, and Apple CarPlay. Unfortunately, Android Auto capability is not available. The new iDrive system has stunning graphics and is easy to use. If that's not your style, you can also control the system with a knob and buttons on the console or via voice commands. A USB port and Bluetooth streaming come standard; however, you have to pay extra for SiriusXM satellite radio.

The 2022 BMW Z4 comes standard with forward-collision warning and daytime pedestrian detection with city braking, as is BMW's lane-departure warning system. Another driver-assistance tech available as options includes the following: rear-collision protection, active cruise control, active blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. For more information about BMW's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

BMW's warranty is pretty standard for the 2022 Z4; however, its complimentary scheduled maintenance coverage is its crowning jewel.
