Our Review
The BMW iX is back for the 2023 model year, and we feel it's better than ever. The all-new iX lineup features two models to choose from - the xDrive50 and its high-performance sibling, the M60. The xDrive50 cranks out 430 hp and features a new air suspension, while the M60 has a jaw dropping 610 hp and comes with an adaptive dual-axle air suspension. The iX's design combines premium ride comfort with sporty handling attributes while furnishing a spacious, high-quality, and innovative interior that helps you focus on driving actively. Underscored by the enormous BMW Curved Display and sleek see-through rotary knob that runs the new BMW iDrive 8 operating system, a minimalist approach to the iX's handsome interior introduces a cabin stripped to the essentials. The exterior design may not be for everyone, yet we still award this year's 2023 BMW iX a lofty rating of 9.6 for its unparalleled excellence across all categories.

The 2023 BMW iX is fully electric and, unfortunately, lacks the classic roar of a traditional combustion engine. That being said, both powertrains are lightning quick, ensuring the back of your head will be eternally imprinted in the headrest. The xDrive50 model has two electric motors that produce 516 hp, while the M60 model churns out an amazing 610 hp. This allows the high-performance M60 to reach 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds - the same time as a Ferrari Portofino. The xDrive50 is no slouch either, coming in at just 4 seconds from 0-60 mph. Both models feature an optional adjustable air suspension and a rear-wheel-steering system for optimal performance. The ride is smooth, and the handling is agile, making the 2023 iX an excellent choice for those looking for a powerful but efficient vehicle.

The 2023 BMW iX features a stunning interior design, featuring high-quality materials and ample passenger and cargo space. The cabin is light and airy, and the elegant trim and materials used in its construction give it an upscale feel. The number of trim combinations is seemingly endless, with faux-leather, genuine leather, and textile seat fabric options. The trimming down of buttons and controls to a single translucent rotary knob really exudes a modern feel. The iX also offers several high-tech features to maximize comfort, including a large touchscreen display, heated power front seats with integrated speakers for the stereo system, and a panoramic sunroof with electrochromic shading. Its SUV dimensions mean that it has plenty of space for passengers and cargo alike.

The 2023 BMW iX comes standard with various infotainment and connectivity features that are sure to please drivers and passengers alike. The iX and i4 sedans are being used as a launchpad for the new iDrive 8 software, allowing for customization of the interface as well as a refined voice-activated assistant. BMW Curved Display combines a 14.9-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster into one seamless modern screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, wireless device charging, Bluetooth connectivity, six USB ports, HD Radio, and satellite radio round out the rest of the standard features. Additional infotainment options include an 18- or 30-speaker sound system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, augmented reality navigation, gesture recognition, and an interior camera. The 30-speaker sound system is especially impressive, delivering a rich and robust experience.

The 2023 BMW iX offers an array of standard driver-assistance features, including a rearview camera, both front and rear parking sensors, hands-free parking assist, a surround-view parking camera system, and adaptive headlights. For more information about BMW's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

The iX comes standard with similar warranty coverage to its cousin, the i4 sedan. This includes basic coverage for four years or 50,000 miles and extra coverage for electric-vehicle components. All new BMWs also come with a three-year complimentary maintenance plan.

I brought a brand new BMW IX fully electric vehicle in May, 2023. A couple of weeks ago in early September, the “Emergency Call System Malfunction” warning light came on, and I can also smell a chemical burn from the vehicle. I dropped it off to Eastbay BMW in Pleasanton, California. 4350 Rosewood Drive, Pleasanton, California 94588. They confirmed that the “Control Module” may be over heating and causing the emergency call system to malfunction. Eastbay BMW contacted BMW HQ and was informed to just reset the warning light. “BMW advised Eastbay BMW that this is a recurring problem and the unit may overheat”. Eastbay BMW also confirmed that their technicians confirmed the warning codes showed the Control Module may be over heating. Instead of replacing this control module and finding a longer term fix, BMW HQ decided to decline replacement request and to simply reset the warning light until the next incident occurs. I have read on different BMW owners forums that this is an ongoing issue, occurring in many new vehicles as my BMW IX has less than 1,500 miles and we live in the Bay Area, California where it does not get too hot. Given that this relates to and impact the emergency call function, I want to file this formal complaint to ensure BMW address this issue properly and that the NHTSA launch a full investigation. The vehicle automatically lost power, shut down, and came to a complete stop in the middle of the road. During the shut down, I was unable to accelerate, brake, or steer the vehicle to the side of the road to a safe stopping location. The vehicle computer appeared to take over and shut down the vehicle and I was unable to stop it from happening. I was informed by the dealer that the issue was with the Combined Charging Unit. The vehicle has been back at the dealer since July 17, 2023 and I do not know if the Combined Charging Unit is still on the vehicle and available for inspection. There was a recall for a software update that was supposed to address a known issue with loss of power. Prior to this incident, that software update had been completed for this vehicle. Our safety and the safety of others was put at risk because our vehicle lost power and came to a complete stop in the middle of the road. I was unable to control the vehicle or get to a safe stopping place after the issue started. This could have caused a serious and potentially fatal accident had our vehicle been hit. I do not know if the issue has been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. The vehicle and vehicle component have been inspected by the Service Department at the dealer where we purchased the vehicle. I do not know of inspection by any other party. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. Once the vehicle began to shut down, a message came up stating that the vehicle was shutting down. The vehicle also automatically called BMW Emergency Services and a representative came on asking if we had been in a crash or needed assistance.Complaint Date:

When overtaking a car on a freeway that is on my right side, occasionally the car, without warning and with no information displayed, my car will suddenly brake for no reason about 3 to 5 mph. I use the accelerator pedal immediately to return to the original speed. This has happened maybe 8 or 10 times. The car has 14,000 miles on it. My wife will not allow me to use the adaptive cruise control when she is in the car as she gets scared when the car suddenly brakes. She is afraid their may be a car behind that might hit us. I have not reported this to BMW.Complaint Date:

The plastic seat insert that borders the square hole just below the headrest is painful to shorter passengers. Their head feels it even with minor braking. The BMW “fix” (a foam plug) does not provide enough padding or ergonomic benefit to remedy the problem and is issued for a steep fee at the dealership. The major safety issue is if there is a collision. No person’s head should be thrown against a hard plastic object in an accident! Shouldn’t the materials of a headrest be regulated? Shouldn’t there be firm padding made of a soft and relatively flat material?Complaint Date:

I just purchased a 2023 BMW iX xDrive50 and have identified a safety hazard. The car has a feature that automatically locks or unlocks the vehicle when approaching or leaving the vehicle with a key. There have been two occasions, when I had just put my toddler in his car seat, that the doors locked when I shut the door. My purse with key and phone were also inside the car. The car locked because the second keyholder, my partner, was leaving our home at the same time and had the second key on him. I had no way to unlock the car and get to my son. Fortunately, I was able to flag down my partner both times before he drove off. I find this to be quite dangerous as I would have had no way to get my son out of the locked car easily or call for help if he had driven off. I would like to see this issue reported to BMW and corrected. The VIN is [XXX]. Please let me know if I can provide additional details on this issue. I am writing to you once again to report my concerns that BMW is not in compliance with NHSTA requirements that recalls be repaired in a 'timely fashion.' This car has a recall for the driver's airbag that was issued in mid February of this year. It his now 3 months later, and my dealer tells me it will likely be months from now that they can finally replace the faulty airbag. It is very very distressing to have to drive a car that is less than fully safe. I cannot understand why BMW USA refuses to cancel my lease and take back the car. I cannot buy the car and sell it to someone else because of the recall (even though this option would lead to a significant financial loss to me)--because of the recall, I cannot buy off the lease. A 5-6 month delay to fix a faulty driver's side airbag is NOT a prompt repair. i am once again asking NHTSA to force BMW USA to take back my car and cancel my remaining lease payments so that I may get a fully safe car to drive. Thank you for considering this request.Complaint Date:

I am writing to you about the current recall you have on the airbags for this car. I spoke today with BMW USA Consumer Relations and they tell me that it may be weeks or months until the replacement airbags are available. I am very worried about driving a car for so long where the airbags are not reliable. I am surprised that BMW is allowed to have me wait for months for a replacement of as vital a safety feature as driver airbags. In the meantime, I cannot sell the car, I cannot purchase the lease as there is a recall. Plus BMW refuses to allow me to end the lease. I hope you will consider making this a 'do not drive' recall instead of putting drivers of this very expensive car at risk for so many weeks. Thanks for your attention to this request.Complaint Date:

My BMW IX accelerates on its own without me pushing the pedal. It happens randomly and without warning. Sometimes it happens as I am taking off from a traffic light or a stop sign. I barely push the accelerator to start going and the car all of a sudden accelerates rapidly. I take my foot off the accelerator but it still continues to accelerate. Braking stops it. As it happens randomly, I sincerely doubt the dealership can reproduce this by a test drive. I think it is a software problem and a dangerous one at that. I can imagine that this could lead to disastrous consequences. I have been reading online that it has happened to other BMW IX drivers as well. I hope they have also reported this to NHTSA. It just happened to me today (3/16/2023) again and has happened to me at least in two other instances.Complaint Date:

My 1 week old iX had an unfortunate accident. I was backing it into the garage using the Recorded Path. This path has been used successfully multiple times since I got the car. Yesterday, while the car was steering into the garage, instead of steering onto the garage, it backed up straight into the wall opening, damaging the rear bumper and the garage wall. The garage wall moved in about 2-3 inches rendering the garage door inoperable. The CAR SENSORS DIDN’T STOP THE CAR although it was very clear it was heading for an obstacle, THE HOUSE WALL. Initially, I didn’t realize the magnitude of the damage, I drove the car forward, repositioned it and re-engaged the recorded path back up maneuverb, which the car carried our successfully this second time. It’s when I exited I realized the magnitude of the damage to the car and house. The sensors on the car did not stop the car nor did they alert. Any one experienced this problem. This maneuver doesn't required driver attention since it is meant to be operated remotely from the My BMW app. However, in this incident I was in the vehicle and ass attentive as I could. The car back up so fast to be stopped and there were no warnings. The vehicle has a drive recorder but I do not know if it records these incidents and where it captured it. I filed a report with USAA both for vehicle and home damage.Complaint Date:

The Icon Adaptive Led headlights w/Laserlight are designed so that the high beam tracks (aims) to steering wheel inputs, and possibly camera inputs, in order to illuminate the road ahead. The center of the beam is focused more tightly than is generally done with headlights which have illumination fixed to the centerline of the car. This feature is described on page 160 of the operating manual, and is the same as the exactly comparable headlights on my 2020 BMW M340i, which I also own. The car has been at the dealership for the past 11 days due to a separate safety recall, and the car has received all current software updates. Despite this, the "adaptive" headlights illumination is still fixed to the centerline of the car. I am informed by the dealership that other iX models with the same lighting option behave similarly, this is not a defect affecting only my particular vehicle. The vehicle's diagnostics have not indicated any headlight fault. This is a significant safety matter, because the brighter focused portion high beam light output is only quite rarely actually aimed at the road surface. A broader beam pattern would be appropriate, were these intended to be fixed rather than adaptive headlights. And this is completely at odds with all other recent BMW models with the Icon Adaptive LED headlights w/Laserlight.Complaint Date:
