Engine Oil Service – BMW N52 6 Cylinder Engine
Step 1 - Purchase Parts
BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine Oil
The debate over which brand of oil is best for your BMW is worse than politics these days. All we can say is in our opinion, the best engine oil is factory engine oil. Genuine BMW TwinPower oil is the same engine lubricant that your BMW was shipped from the factory with.
Engine Oil Filter
We understand trying to save a buck here or there...but when it comes to oil filters it just doesn't make sense. A Genuine BMW oil filter costs pennies more than aftermarket brands and you are guaranteed to get the same factory oil filter that would be installed at the dealership.
Step 2 - Repair Procedure
The N52 six-cylinder engine was found in many different BMW vehicles. The following instructions may differ slightly depending on year and model.
The engine must be at "operating temperature" in order for the oil to drain correctly. If the engine is cold, start it and allow it to warm up for about 5 minutes.
- Remove the oil filter cap using a cap removal tool. Please see our parts section above to order one if necessary.
- The accompanying image is shown with the underbody protection removed.
- Locate the oil drain plug (1) underneath the engine of the vehicle. There will most likely be a hinged flap in the underbody protection panel to access the plug.
- Place an oil drain pan under the plug. Remove the plug and allow the engine oil to thoroughly drain. Insert a new copper sealing ring on the drain plug (included with the oil filter) and torque to 25 NM (18.5 ft/lb)
- Remove the old oil filter from the cap. Replace o-ring (3) and o-ring (2) (included with oil filter).
- Install a new oil filter. Reinstall the cap and torque to 25 NM (18.5 ft/lb).
