Our Review
The BMW X1 is a versatile SUV that offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo. In addition, it's outfitted with several premium features and advanced technology, making it a good choice for those looking to purchase a small luxury SUV. Under the hood, the X1 is powered by a peppy turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces plenty of power for daily driving and highway cruising. Inside, the X1 boasts comfortable and spacious seating for five passengers. Standard features include leatherette upholstery, automatic climate control, and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Only one engine option is available for the 2022 X1 - a 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder that puts out 258 ft-lbs of torque. In an all-wheel-drive test, the xDrive28i managed a 6.3-second 0- 60-mph time, making it one of the quicker SUVs in its class. The 2022 X1 comes standard with front-wheel drive. For an extra $2000, the faster X1 all-wheel-drive model can be purchased, making it well worth the extra money. Steering and handling on both X1 models is terrific. However, the stiff riding suspension may only appeal to a distinct segment of buyers.
Standard features include heated front seats, automatic climate control, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and an infotainment system with a touch screen and center console control knob. The X1 has two rows of seats and can accommodate up to five passengers. The back seat is roomy enough for two adults and has plenty of headroom and legroom. In addition, the cargo area is sizable for the class and can expand by folding down the back seats. Seven carry-on cases fit behind the second row and nineteen with the rear seats folded down. Although not overwhelming for a luxury SUV, the BMW X1 interior is acceptable for the price and will still appeal to many shoppers.
Anyone shopping for a new car knows that infotainment systems have come a long way in recent years. BMW's iDrive system has long been considered one of the best, and the latest version in the 2022 X1 is no exception. The system is intuitive and user-friendly, with clear menus and icons. The 8.8-inch touchscreen display is bright and sharp, and the optional 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is a nice touch. Standard features include Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Several optional upgrades are available, such as an upgraded sound system, navigation, and a wireless charging pad.
The new BMW X1 is packed with safety and driver-assistance features, making it an excellent choice for families. For starters, the X1 comes standard with front and rear collision warning and automatic emergency braking. This comprehensive system can help prevent accidents or at least reduce their severity. In addition, the X1 features adaptive cruise control, which can help keep you at a safe distance from the car in front of you. Lane-departure warning and intervention and a 360-degree camera system make it easy to park in tight spots. The X1 also has an optional head-up display that projects vital information onto the windshield so that you can keep your eyes on the road. In government crash tests, the X1 earned five stars for overall safety.
