Our Review
The 2020 BMW X2 is an impressive SUV that combines premium style and performance into one sleek package. With a well-designed athletic exterior, the BMW X2 will quickly grab your attention when you see one on the highway. Under the hood, the X2 is powered by a reliable 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that generates 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It's mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The X2 comes in both front wheel and all-wheel drive versions. The X2 has successfully coupled tight handling with a comfortable ride, making it a fun yet practical SUV. The interior of the X2 sports a modern cabin with plenty of high-tech features, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Due to the roofline, cargo space is limited in the X2 - it wouldn't be our first choice to take the family on a long driving vacation in. But if you are looking for a cool looking SUV with great handling characteristics, the 2020 BMW X2 is an excellent choice.
WHAT'S NEW
For 2020, BMW has made some updates from the prior year. The standard 6.5-inch infotainment display has been replaced with an 8.8-inch display that was previously optional. Navigation is now standard in all X2 models as well. The X2 is equipped with the same powertrain as the X1, a responsive 228-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW offers this model in two versions: sDrive28i for front-wheel drive or xDrive28 for all-wheel drive. The all-wheel-drive X2 accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.4 seconds - just slightly behind the Volvo XC40 T5. It's a quick little engine that we found really fun to drive - it revs quickly, has great torque, and is incredibly smooth. The M35i model adds some extra punch with its 302 horsepower sprinting to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. We found the suspension on the M35i to be a bit harsher than its sibling so it may not be the best choice for those looking for more of a touring SUV.
Fuel Economy
Although the X2 may not have the most impressive fuel-efficiency ratings in its category, they are not overly that bad; front-wheel drive models can achieve a maximum of 32 mpg on highways, and all-wheel X2s get up to 31 mpg.The interior design of the X2 is well done. The cabin is nicely laid out with comfortable sport seats and easy to reach controls. Passenger comfort is good, although rear-seat headroom is a bit tight due to the X2's aggressive roof line. The sloping roof also affects rear storage - if you are planning on taking a long trip with the kids with lots of baggage, then you may need to take a different vehicle. Visibility out of the cabin is also restricted due to the roof but is tolerable. BMW offers a nice array of upholstery-color options in both faux and genuine leather, as well as five different trims. Overall, we found the interior of the 2020 VMW X2 to be modern and comfortable despite its space limitations.
The X2 comes standard with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation and BMW's iDrive software interface, which is both intuitive and visually appealing. Additionally, the system can also be controlled via a rotary knob located on the center console. Opting for the Premium package adds a head-up display, providing important information such as speed and navigation directions directly in the driver's line of sight. Apple CarPlay capability is standard, although the X2 does not offer Android Auto capability. For music enthusiasts, the seven-speaker audio system will suffice, but for those seeking a premium listening experience, an optional Harman/Kardon sound system is available.
While the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not yet tested the X2, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick last year. The X2 comes standard with a basic set of driver-assistance features, such as automated emergency braking, but more advanced features are available at an additional cost. Key safety features include:
In terms of warranty coverage, the X2's policies are consistent with the class average. BMW offers a three-year warranty that includes complimentary scheduled maintenance, which is a perk that Mercedes does not offer. However, drivers who plan on putting a lot of miles on their vehicle may find better options with the Lexus NX, the Lincoln MKC, or the Cadillac XT4, which all offer additional years and miles of powertrain protection.

WHILE SITTING AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT WITH ALL THE DOORS LOCKED, THE HATCHBACK OPENED WITHOUT ANY PROMPT FROM THE KEY FOB OR DOOR LATCH. THE CAR WAS NOT MOVING, SO I WAS ABLE TO USE THE DOOR LATCH TO CLOSE THE BACK HATCH. ABOUT 30 SECONDS LATER, THE HATCH UNLATCHED TO OPEN, BUT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND AS SOON AS I LIFTED MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE, THE HATCH STOPPED OPENING AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO A PARKING LOT TO FULLY CLOSE THE HATCH AGAIN.Vehicle Specifications
