Our Review
In our (humble) opinion, the 2022 BMW 2-series is close to having the perfect ride of any small luxury coupe on the market. That may sound like an audacious statement, but BMW took a bold step forward this year, giving the 2 Series a more aggressive look and improved performance from previous generations. Its turbocharged engines include a 255-hp four-cylinder (230i models) and a 382-hp straight-six (M240i) and are available with rear- or all-wheel drive. Though the manual transmission and convertible body style are now a thing of the past, the 2022 2-series coupe is just as enjoyable to drive and even more balanced and nimble on the road. With a slightly more aggressive look and fresh modern interior, the 2022 BMW 2-series exceeds expectations as one of BMW's most fun and affordable vehicles.

The 2022 BMW 230i features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 255 horsepower and 295 lbs of torque and a silky smooth 8-speed transmission. The 230i runs a 0-60 mph in 5.1 seconds and a quarter mile in 13.7 seconds at 101 mph. The M240i features a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six that produces 382 horsepower and 369 lbs of torque. The M240i reaches 60 mph in a smoking fast 3.6 seconds and has a quarter mile time of 11.8 seconds at 122 mph. The BMW 230i has optional 19-inch wheels on performance tires, upgraded brakes, a variable-ratio steering system, and an electronically controlled rear differential. These features come standard on the M240i.

While not earth-shattering, the vehicle's interior features high-quality materials and overall is pretty nice for a sports coupe. It's been reported by many owners that the front seats could be more supportive. A set of analog gauges are standard, with an optional 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and heads-up display available. The rear seat is useless, although most buyers aren't purchasing a BMW 2 series to shuttle their kids back and forth to soccer games. Trunk space is also limited, but this is a tradeoff for owning an incredibly nimble coupe.

The 2022 BMW 2-series offers an excellent infotainment and connectivity system. You can choose between an 8.8-inch or 10.3-inch touchscreen, steering wheel controls, and voice commands. Shortcut buttons surround the rotary controller on the center console, and there's even a physical volume knob. Every model includes a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 10-speaker stereo. You can upgrade to an optional 14-speaker, 464-watt Harman Kardon setup if you want more audio power.

The 2022 BMW 2-series comes standard with various safety and driver assistance features. These include blind-spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, and a self-parking assist. The 2-series can also be optioned with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go technology. The car has been crash-tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Key safety features include:

The 2022 BMW 2-series offers a limited warranty that covers four years or 50,000 miles and a powertrain warranty that covers four years or 50,000 miles. Additionally, BMW offers complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles. BMW's coverage is highly competitive compared to other luxury automakers and is a perk that Mercedes-Benz does not offer.

I have owned a 2022 BMW M240i for a few years now, and as it ages out of warranty, I have replaced both headlights a total of 4 times. I fear additional pairs will be required as unfortunately these headlights tend to crack from regular driving. I have spent a few hours on a couple different M240i user generated resources, and there are several reports of this model's headlights cracking either due to improper housings from factory, or being overly tightened. The end result is the same, however, a complete or mostly complete fogging of the headlight reducing illumination of the light(s) to almost nil. I have spoken to several BMW reps and they tell me there is no fix for this issue and that it persists even in the newer models, including the 2025. That's 4 years in total of a model with faulty headlight assemblies and the only fix BMW has is to replace these $2k headlights with a new set that will eventually incur the same issue. This needs to be addressed with a TSB or a remodel of the headlight housing entirely. It's unfair to consider headlight assemblies as wear/tear items when no collision has occurred. The main issue, however, is the lack of safety this will inevitably cause at night while driving on dark roads with only 15-20% light output.
