All available engine options for the 2023 BMW 5 Series are paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The transmission is smooth and shifts quickly, allowing the engines to make the most of their power. Although the handling is acceptable across all models, it definitely lacks the responsiveness of previous years. The steering feedback can often be limp, and the ride often feels more "comfort-oriented" than sporty. The 530i features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine that produces 248 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque with all-wheel drive as the standard option and ran a 0-60 mph time in 6.1 seconds. The 540i comes with a beefier 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbocharged engine that generates 355 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheel drive 540i sprinted to 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds - the all wheel drive version in 4.9 seconds. The punchy hybrid 530e runs on a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine which, combined with an electric motor, produces a combined output of 288 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The rear wheel drive 530e shot to 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds and 5.3 seconds with all-wheel drive. The top-of-the-line M550i xDrive boasts a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8 engine that produces an impressive 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. It scorches the 0-60 mph run in an astonishing 3.7 seconds...about the same time as the high performance BMW M3.

The 2023 BMW 5 series tops its segment in interior comfort and technology. The dashboard is meticulously crafted and angled toward the driver, while the standard 16-way or optional 20-way seats can comfortably accommodate the anatomy of any driver. Its rear legroom measures 36.5 inches, slightly less than that of the Audi A6 and Genesis G80. Its luggage space is impressive allowing room for six suitcases in the trunk. Unfortunately the cabin lacks cubbies and storage compartments. The BMW 5 Series has a large 12.3-inch high-resolution central display that runs the iDrive 7 operating system. The Premium Package features a standard Harman Kardon system on the M550i xDrive, while a Bowers & Wilkens 16-speaker 1400-watt sound system is available on the M5 for $3,400.
