Step 1 - Purchase Parts

You will need the following parts and supplies to perform this repair.

BMW TwinPower Turbo Engine Oil

The debate over which brand of oil is best for your BMW is worse than politics these days. All we can say is in our opinion, the best engine oil is factory engine oil. Genuine BMW TwinPower oil is the same engine lubricant that your BMW was shipped from the factory with.

Oil Filter - Genuine BMW

If in doubt as to which brand of oil filter to use, we suggest going with a Genuine BMW one. This is the same factory filter that would be installed at the BMW dealership.

1. replacing the engine oil and filter

- Remove the acoustic cover by pulling up until it releases from its rubber grommets.

- Remove the oil filter cover (1)

unclip the positive battery cable and remove the sealing gasket

- Detach the positive battery cable (1) and the sealing gasket (2) so the oil filter can be accessed.

remove the oil filter with a 27mm oil filter socket

- Using a 27mm oil filter socket removal tool, remove the oil filter cover.

- Remove the oil filler cap. The oil will not properly drain out of the engine unless the cap is removed!

- Moving underneath the vehicle, open the access hatch (2) by turning the thumb release (1). the oil drain plug is inside the access hatch.

- Remove the oil drain plug (1). Allow the oil to thoroughly drain out.

- Replace the oil drain plug using a new sealing washer. Torque the drain plug to 25 Nm (18 ft-lb).

install a new oil filter element and o-rings

- Install a new oil filter element (2) into the oil filter cap. Make sure to replace the sealing o-rings (1) and (3) when installing a new oil filter.

- Apply a light coating of engine oil to the sealing o-ring (1).

- Insert the oil filter back into the engine and hand tighten. Torque the oil filter cap to 25 Nm (18 ft-lb).
