Our Review
If 2016 marked the birth of the G48 facelift, then the gorgeous, kinks-free, fully refined 2021 X1 represents the completion of that initial vision as a cornerstone in BMW's lineup. The compact stature of this SUV belies the power and character within, thanks to its winning chassis that features a punchy four-cylinder engine. With front- and all-wheel drive both available, the BMW X1 offers drivers a polished and sporty driving experience. But this pep doesn’t come at the expense of comfort; drivers will appreciate the well-crafted interior with plenty of legroom and headroom for everyone onboard to enjoy long rides in luxurious comfort. Thanks to signature BMW features like Driving Dynamics Control and adjustable Sport Seats, you can dial up the sports car driving feel whenever you’re feeling adventurous. Plus, if you need storage or are transporting cargo, then the X1 offers plenty of space that can be increased via folding rear seats for added convenience.
The standard model comes equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission (228 hp and 258 lb-ft), which provides plenty of pep and respectable fuel economy. A snappy accelerator paired with the all-wheel drive model hits 0-60 mph in just 6.3 seconds. Front-wheel drive is standard on the X1, with all-wheel drive available as an option. A generous fuel economy grants 31 mph on the highway, and its turbo four still packs enough of a punch when you want to have some fun.
Any BMW enthusiast knows that the X1 has what it takes to make your journey extraordinary. Looking inside, the X1 is handsomely appointed with mostly premium materials, giving you an elegant yet sporty experience. The great driving position also provides you with good visibility, as well as maneuverability – but even with its advanced driver-focused layout and gauge array, cost-cutting was still an issue when it comes to details like the flimsy glovebox and front seat bin. That said, the range of motion for the steering wheel could do with some improvement – however, it doesn’t take away from how great the cockpit feels overall. With plenty of cargo space available and 19 carry-on bags easily tucked into the rear seats when folded down, no journey in the X1 will feel dull or cramped! Its amenities truly make it feel like home on wheels. In short, it's perfect for anyone who appreciates a car with a sporty personality and hearty features. All of these come together to provide a pleasant and safe ride for any BMW enthusiasts out there!
BMW has always been known for luxurious interiors and its X1 is no exception. The standard infotainment system proves this, enabling drivers to stay connected without fuss. Operating the 8.8-inch iDrive screen is intuitive with the rotary knob located conveniently on the center console, allowing you to effortlessly adjust your navigation settings, Bluetooth phone or audio programming, or SiriusXM satellite radio station choice. In addition, you can sync your phone options via Apple CarPlay (Android Auto is currently not available). For added sophistication, upgrade to the optional 12-speaker Harman/Kardon sound system which speaks volumes about BMW's commitment to quality and providing ultimate driver satisfaction. Whether it be staying updated on directions or enjoying an array of sounds from classic up-tempo tunes to mellow instrumentals, you will be entertained for miles in the X1. All these amenities make for a safe and enjoyable journey every time.
The BMW X1 is a truly remarkable piece of engineering. It received the highest rating, five stars, from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), impressing testing boards with its innovative features and safety-focused design. At its base level, it comes with a range of standard driver-assistance technology. Key standard safety features include:
Those shopping for premium SUVs know that each BMW model is backed with a robust limited warranty and powertrain protection. BMW's four-year/50,000-mile coverage is industry standard, but the company takes it up a notch by providing three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance - something not found on rivals like the Lexus NX and Lincoln MKC. However, those competitors offer more comprehensive powertrain coverage (six years/70,000 miles), but their complimentary scheduled maintenance periods are significantly shorter than BMW's.
